My slot box project

The finished boxes

I needed some good boxes for the slot cars to carry them and the tools down to the club and on races. Even though my father is a retired carpenter building them from scratch without machine tools (we only have hand tools) didn’t look like a good way since you need strength and lightness.

I scanned all catalogues and stores I could come by to see if there was anything that could be used. One day I went to IKEA and happened to lay my eyes on a drawer box that was in plywood and had the sides very robust put together.

What we began with: “Sture” from IKEA

The size was 60 x 40 x 30 cm. Not bad at all. And the price was 295 sek. I bought two of them and we started to convert them by laying them down and from old left over plywood at home make a top to fill the big hole where the drawers originally comes out, and making shelves etc. Even if we started with something rather finished, it was still quite much work before we where finished. Below you can see how the boxes turned out:

From above.

We had to shorten the drawers to get them to fit since we cut of the front to get the doors and that made the box less deep off course.

In the doors there is place for tires and other stuff.

The door on the other side has clips for tools

The boxes have reinforcement in the bottom. This is a two fold reason: 1) The bottom was the back before on the IKEA box and it was only made of 5 mm plywood so it needed to get more strength. Also when two boxes are on each other the handle from the box below sticks up in the empty space.
